Street Snack · Fried Fritters in Rojak Sauce

Rojak (Kuala Belait style)

🥗
Photo coming soon

It got its start as a small stall in Kuala Belait, and demand eventually pulled the business toward the capital and beyond — the opposite of the usual pattern of dishes spreading from Bandar Seri Begawan outward to the districts.

Rojak here means an assortment of deep-fried fritters — tofu, prawn fritters, hard-boiled egg, cuttlefish — torn into pieces and dunked in a sweet-savory, almost toffee-like peanut sauce, often ordered alongside chicken rice or a glass of ABC (ice kacang). Kuala Belait's Lee Loi Fatt built its name on the combination before expanding branches to Kiulap, Tutong, and Serusop.

Why it's made this way: The dish grew out of Kuala Belait's own street-food scene rather than being imported from the capital, one of the rare cases where a Bruneian food business expanded from a district town toward Bandar Seri Begawan instead of the other way around.
