The water at the public taps beside the old Central Mineral Baths comes out at around 46°C, and locals still queue with empty bottles to fill up for free.
Sofia's mineral water flows warm and faintly mineral-scented from public fountains scattered across the city, most famously the row of taps beside the former Central Mineral Baths. Bulgarians drink it plain, believing in its digestive and therapeutic properties.
Why it's made this way: Sofia was built directly atop thermal mineral springs the Romans and Ottomans both prized for public bathhouses, and the everyday habit of drinking straight from the source has remained a distinctly Sofia custom.
