In 1909, grape growers near Veliko Tarnovo founded the very first winemaking cooperative in the entire Balkans, naming it simply after the local grape: Gamza.
Gamza is a light-to-medium bodied red wine with bright cherry and berry fruit and a peppery spice, made from an indigenous grape variety grown on the hills around Suhindol, near Veliko Tarnovo. It's typically drunk young and slightly chilled rather than aged for decades.
Why it's made this way: The Suhindol cooperative near Veliko Tarnovo pioneered organized Bulgarian winemaking over a century ago, and the Gamza grape has remained the emblematic red variety of this stretch of the Danubian Plain ever since.
