Suanye (Sour-Spicy Pickled Fruit)

🥭
Photo coming soon

'Ye' is Nanning Cantonese for 'thing', so the name simply means 'sour stuff', and almost any fruit or vegetable can go in the jar.

Seasonal fruit and vegetables, such as green mango, plums, pineapple and radish, are steeped in vinegar, sugar and chili until tangy and crunchy. Stalls display them in glass jars and sell them by the bag.

Why it's made this way: Suanye stalls are part of everyday street life in Nanning, and 'Nanning suanye making' was added to Guangxi's ninth regional intangible heritage list in 2023.
