Legend traces its spring water to a gift from an immortal to a kind village girl — centuries later, Emperor Qianlong reportedly had barrels of it shipped to the palace.
Babaoshi is a pear-flavored soda that's been made in Shenyang since the 1920s, sold in classic glass bottles at corner stores and night markets across Liaoning. It's punchier and fruitier than most Chinese sodas, and remains a favorite local souvenir.
Why it's made this way: After surviving Japanese occupation, factory damage, and a near-fatal trademark deal with Coca-Cola, Babaoshi's survival makes it a point of civic pride in Shenyang.
