Zagreb's own kremšnita is topped with chocolate glaze, while the Samobor slice keeps a plain puff-pastry lid dusted with sugar.
A thick layer of vanilla custard is sandwiched between sheets of flaky puff pastry and dusted with powdered sugar. The version from Samobor, just outside Zagreb, is considered the definitive one and is sold by the slice at the town's historic bakeries and cafés.
Why it's made this way: Samobor's cafés, above all U Prolazu on the main square, made the tall custard slice the town's calling card, and weekend visitors drive out from Zagreb for it.
