Staropramen's name means 'old spring,' yet the brewery itself was brand new when it opened in 1869 — a nod to Prague's older brewing heritage rather than to its own history.
Staropramen is a golden Czech lager brewed since 1869 in Prague's Smíchov district on the west bank of the Vltava. It has a firm malt backbone, gentle Saaz hop bitterness, and the clean, well-carbonated finish typical of Czech pale lagers.
Why it's made this way: Smíchov grew into one of Central Europe's great 19th-century brewing quarters, and Staropramen became Prague's own beer in the way Pilsner belongs to Plzeň — a genuine product of the capital itself.
