The name literally translates to 'drowned men' — a nod to the sausages bobbing in their jar of vinegar brine like something out of a ghost story.

Whole sausages pickled in a vinegar brine with onion, peppercorns, and bay leaf, served cold straight from the jar with dark bread and mustard — a fixture of Prague pub bars and beer-hall snack counters.

Why it's made this way: Pickling was a simple way to keep sausage edible without refrigeration, and the tangy, sour bite pairs naturally with Czech beer, which is exactly why it never left the pub menu.
