Ceres beer became such a hit in West Africa, especially Nigeria, that at times more of it was sold there than in Denmark itself — all brewed under a name borrowed from the Roman goddess of the harvest.
Ceres is a Danish beer brand built around clean, crisp pilsners and the bolder Ceres Stout, known for its dark, roasted, slightly sweet character. It's a straightforward, sessionable beer style rooted in over 150 years of Aarhus brewing.
Why it's made this way: Founded in Aarhus in 1856, Ceres grew into one of the city's largest employers and a purveyor to the Danish royal court by 1914 — and though the original brewery closed in 2008, the brand and its Aarhus roots remain a point of local pride, memorialized in the redeveloped 'CeresByen' district.
