Apaneca sits in a mountain range cool enough that frost occasionally forms overnight, an unusual condition for Central America that slows the coffee cherries and concentrates their flavor.
Bright, high-altitude coffee grown around Apaneca and Ataco, brewed strong and sold hot in small cups from street stands along the Ruta de las Flores, often paired with sweet bread.
Why it's made this way: Ahuachapán's Apaneca-Ilamatepec mountain range is one of El Salvador's premier coffee zones, and roadside coffee stands sell the harvest as a point of local identity.
