There isn't a single grapevine on site — Finland's oldest winery makes its wines entirely from northern berries and fruit, and it was also the first in the country to produce proper sparkling wine, using the traditional Champagne method on currants instead of grapes.
Hermannin Viinitila's wines are fermented from Finnish berries like currants, gooseberries and other cold-climate fruit rather than grapes, ranging from dry table wines to sparkling and dessert styles. They're tart, aromatic and distinctly northern in character.
Why it's made this way: Founded in 1989 in Ilomantsi, deep in North Karelia near the Russian border, it became Finland's first commercial winery, proof that serious wine-style production could take root even this far north using what actually grows there.
