Sea buckthorn berries are so acidic and thorny to harvest that pickers often freeze whole branches first and shake the berries loose — yet the Turku archipelago's orchards have turned this brutal harvest into a signature regional product anyway.
Tyrni is a bright orange juice pressed from sea buckthorn berries, prized for its intensely tart, citrus-like flavor and very high vitamin C content. It's often diluted or blended with apple juice, or enjoyed as a sharp little 'health shot.'
Why it's made this way: The sheltered, sunny islands of the Turku archipelago in Varsinais-Suomi provide the mild coastal microclimate sea buckthorn needs, and family orchards there, growing apples alongside it, have made the berry a signature regional product.
