Alsace Gewürztraminer

Unlike almost everywhere else in France, Alsace labels its wines by grape variety rather than by village or château — a Germanic-influenced habit left over from the region's centuries of shifting between France and Germany.

Gewürztraminer from Alsace is a golden, intensely aromatic white wine bursting with lychee, rose, and spice notes, usually with a touch of residual sweetness balanced by good acidity. It's poured in tall, slender green-stemmed glasses and served alongside choucroute, foie gras, or Munster cheese.

Why it's made this way: The grape reaches its most famous, most perfumed expression on the limestone and granite slopes of the Alsace wine route between Strasbourg and Colmar, where the region's cool climate and dry, sheltered valleys have shaped a wine culture found nowhere else in France.
