Horchata de Morro

The morro tree's hard round gourds are also dried and cut into cups and bowls, so the same tree can supply both the drink and the vessel it's served in.

Honduran horchata blends ground morro (jícaro) seeds with sesame seeds, cacao, cinnamon, and other spices into a milky, nutty, tan-colored drink served cold over ice. It's especially associated with southern Honduras and is sold by street vendors and made in large batches for birthdays and gatherings.

Why it's made this way: Made from a tree that appears in Maya tradition, this seed-based horchata is shared with neighboring El Salvador, where it is best known, and sets both apart from Mexico's rice-based version.
