They look like meatballs but contain no meat: just cheese, eggs and stale bread.
Balls of grated cheese, egg and stale bread, fried and usually simmered in tomato sauce; food trucks and sagra stands also serve them dry in a paper cone.
Why it's made this way: A peasant dish of Abruzzo, especially the province of Chieti; the Accademia Italiana della Cucina registered an official recipe, and villages such as Santa Maria Imbaro hold summer sagre in its name.
