According to the local account, it was first shaped by hand when a gelato maker ran out of moulds while making ice cream for a wedding.

A ball of hazelnut gelato shaped in the palm of the hand around a core of melted dark chocolate, then dusted with cocoa and sugar, sold by the gelaterie of Pizzo.

Why it's made this way: It was created around 1952 at a gelateria in Pizzo, in the province of Vibo Valentia, and is a listed traditional food product.
