It was invented in 1925-26 at Turin's Caffè Mulassano and named by the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, who coined 'tramezzino' from the Italian for 'in between.'
A tramezzino is soft, crustless white bread cut diagonally into a triangle and filled cold with combinations like tuna and egg, ham and artichoke, or shrimp and mayonnaise. Turin's cafés and market bars stack them on trays behind the counter.
