Unlike alloco, the fried plantain slices, claclo is made from plantain so ripe it's almost black, mashed into a batter so it fries up as a soft, sweet fritter rather than a crisp slice.

Overripe plantain is mashed with a little flour, onion, chili and ginger into a soft dough, then dropped by the spoonful into hot oil, often palm oil, and fried into golden balls. Vendors sell them hot in paper cones across Abidjan, especially as an afternoon snack.

Why it's made this way: It's one of several distinct ways Abidjan street cooks turn plantain into a snack, each with its own name and texture; claclo is the way vendors use up plantain too ripe to slice for alloco.
