Wet sugar sold near Frome, one of Jamaica's oldest and largest sugar factories, is so unrefined and moist it's scooped rather than poured, a texture almost never seen in supermarket sugar.

Freshly processed, moist, dark cane sugar is sold loose by the scoop or wrapped in paper from small stands and trucks near Westmoreland's sugar factory towns.

Why it's made this way: Westmoreland's Frome sugar factory has anchored the parish's cane industry for generations, and roadside wet sugar sales are a direct, everyday byproduct of that industry.
