Frome estate was the flashpoint of the 1938 labour uprising that spread across Jamaica and helped give rise to the island's modern trade unions and political parties.

Freshly processed, moist, dark cane sugar is sold loose by the scoop or wrapped in paper from small stands and trucks near Westmoreland's sugar factory towns.

Why it's made this way: Westmoreland's Frome sugar factory has anchored the parish's cane industry for generations, and roadside wet sugar sales are a direct, everyday byproduct of that industry.
