Nagoya lore credits a café called Mitsuba with creating it around 1921, after staff noticed students dunking buttered toast into zenzai, a sweet red bean soup.

Thick-cut slices of bread are toasted, spread with butter and topped or paired with sweetened azuki bean paste (ogura-an), typically served at old-school kissaten (coffee shops) as part of a set with coffee.

Why it's made this way: Nagoya's kissaten culture, known nationwide for its elaborate free "morning service" sets, popularized the pairing from the mid-20th century onward, grafting a Western toast-and-coffee habit onto the traditional Japanese sweetness of red bean paste.
