Oyaki (Nagano Stuffed Dumplings)

Nagano listed oyaki as a prefectural intangible folk cultural property in 1983, when no other prefecture had yet designated a food that way.
Wheat or buckwheat dough wrapped around fillings such as stir-fried nozawana pickles, dried daikon, eggplant or pumpkin, then griddled and steamed or baked, sold hot from shops and stands around Nagano.
Why it's made this way: Oyaki comes from Nagano's cold mountain areas, where rice grew poorly and wheat and buckwheat flour were everyday staples; the Nishiyama area of Kamiminochi District is named as its home.
