A single plate can carry legumes, meat, vegetables, eggs, dates, bread, milk and chickpeas all at once — a compressed table of an entire harvest.

This layered meal combines legumes and meat with vegetables, boiled eggs, dates, bread and milk in one shared spread, traditionally prepared in the Nafusa Mountain town of Nalut, near Ghadames, for the Amazigh New Year celebration.

Why it's made this way: Tmeghdal is served specifically to mark Yennayer, the Amazigh New Year, making it one of the clearest living links between Ghadames' Berber-descended communities and their pre-Arab agricultural calendar.
