The name honours French president Patrice de MacMahon, who in 1875 arbitrated the Delagoa Bay dispute in Portugal's favour over Britain, securing what is now the Bay of Maputo.
2M (pronounced 'doish-EM') is a crisp pale lager named after the Mac Mahon brewery in Maputo, which opened in the mid-20th century; the public shortened the name to '2M.' It remains the default beer at roadside barracas and grilled-fish stands from Maputo to the north, served ice-cold alongside chicken or prawns piri-piri.
Why it's made this way: Surviving colonial rule, independence, and civil war largely intact as a brand, 2M became a rare point of everyday national pride shared across Mozambique's regions and ethnic groups.
