Mozambicans don't ask for 'a beer' — they ask for 'a dois-M,' and the brand is so dominant that ordering anything else at a street bar gets you a curious look.
2M (pronounced 'doish-EM,' short for its brewer Cervejas de Moçambique) is a crisp pale lager that's been brewed in the country since the 1930s and remains the default beer at roadside barracas and grilled-fish stands from Maputo to the north. It's served ice-cold in its signature stubby brown bottle, usually alongside chicken or prawns piri-piri.
Why it's made this way: Surviving colonial rule, independence, and civil war largely intact as a brand, 2M became a rare point of everyday national pride shared across Mozambique's regions and ethnic groups.
