Sherpa Teahouse Ritual · Salted Butter Tea

Butter Tea

A dedicated drinker can get through dozens of cups in a day, since the pot is kept going and topped up all day rather than served once and finished.

Butter tea is brewed from dark, long-boiled tea leaves churned together with yak butter and salt until it turns as thick as a light stew. Sherpa households and teahouses along the Everest trekking routes keep a pot going through the day, refilling guests' cups as a basic act of hospitality.

Why it's made this way: In the high, cold Khumbu region, the drink's fat and salt content make it a fast source of warmth and energy, and offering it to guests — even at funerals, where relatives welcome mourners with a cup — is one of the clearest Sherpa gestures of welcome.
