These hard candies are traditionally flavoured with a hint of salt, echoing the salt-marsh coastline of Zeeland where they've long been sold to seaside visitors.

Sugar and butter are boiled to a hard, chewy stage, sometimes with a hint of salt or aniseed, then cooled and cracked into individually wrapped candies. Seaside stalls and sweet shops around Zeeland's coastal towns sell them in twisted paper bags to holidaymakers.

Why it's made this way: They're part of a long Dutch seaside tradition of hard candies sold to visitors, with Zeeland's version drawing on the salt and sea air of its coastline.
