The region's first vines were planted during the 1860s gold rush by Jean Desiré Feraud, a French gold miner, not a winemaker — a proper commercial wine industry wouldn't take root here for over a century.
Central Otago Pinot Noir is a silky, cool-climate red with bright cherry and spice notes, grown on steep inland slopes around Queenstown, Cromwell and Alexandra. Cellar doors dotted along the wine trail pour tastings by the glass, often paired with local venison or salmon.
Why it's made this way: After a false start during the 1860s gold rush, the region's modern wine industry only took root from the 1970s onward, and Pinot Noir now accounts for roughly 80 percent of everything planted here.
