The brewery still sits over the same natural spring it tapped in 1876, and to this day it lets anyone walk up and fill a bottle with that spring water for free.
Speight's is a smooth, malty draught-style beer brewed in the same Dunedin building the company has used since the 1870s. It's the standard pour in pubs across Otago and Southland, marketed for generations under the slogan 'Pride of the South.'
Why it's made this way: Founded in Dunedin in 1876, Speight's grew into one of New Zealand's biggest breweries and has stayed the identity beer of the deep south ever since.
