Løiten Brænderi began in 1855 as a cooperative of small farm distilleries banding together — and by the 1920s, when the Norwegian state nationalized most spirits production, it was one of only two akevitt brands allowed to survive.
Løiten Akevitt is a caraway-forward potato spirit built on a recipe developed in the 1860s using caraway sourced from the Dovre mountains. It's warm and spicy with a clean, herbal backbone, traditionally served ice-cold in small glasses with festive meals.
Why it's made this way: The distillery is rooted in Løten, in what is now Innlandet county, where it has operated — with a recent 2024 revival in its historic buildings — since the mid-1800s, making it one of Norway's oldest and best-known domestic akevitt brands.
