Karsk

There's a traditional way to pour it correctly: drop a coin in the bottom of the cup, fill with coffee until the coin disappears from view, then add moonshine until it reappears.

Karsk is strong black coffee mixed with a shot (or several) of home-distilled spirit, traditionally poured in a specific ritual rather than just stirred together. It's bracing and potent, central to countless Trøndelag gatherings and cabin evenings.

Why it's made this way: Karsk is so tied to Trøndelag identity that a former Norwegian culture minister once said everyone who grew up there has tried it — the region even hosts an annual national karsk-brewing championship.
