The soup's name traces back to the Old Norse verb sjóða, 'to boil', and the same root gives English 'seethe'.

A light, ginger-spiced broth is simmered with mutton and small meatballs, then served with boiled potatoes and carrots on the side. It's festival and celebration food across Trøndelag, traditionally served at weddings and confirmations.

Why it's made this way: Sodd has been a mark of celebration in central Norway for generations, served at weddings, confirmations and national-day gatherings across Trøndelag.
