Banat's version stays a soup, not a stew — a legacy of the region's centuries under Habsburg and Hungarian administration, unlike most of Romania.
Beef, potatoes, and paprika are simmered into a brothy, deep-red soup, ladled from big pots at fairs and market-day stalls across Timişoara and the Banat plain.
Why it's made this way: Banat spent centuries as part of the Habsburg Empire alongside Hungarian and Swabian German communities, and its cuisine keeps the Central European paprika-and-broth style that the rest of Romania mostly left behind.
