This sweet wine was once served exclusively to Moldavian princes, and a 19th-century Paris document ranked it above wines from Germany's Rhine region.
Cotnari is a historic sweet white wine blend from Romanian Moldova, made from native grapes including Grasă de Cotnari and Tămâioasă Românească. Winemaking on the same hillside dates back documented centuries, with its golden age under Prince Stephen the Great in the 1400s.
Why it's made this way: Moldavian rulers built Cotnari's reputation as a royal wine, and the region has guarded that legacy through phylloxera, war and communism alike.
