Its name means 'black maiden grape,' and it very nearly disappeared under communism, when quantity-driven planting favored imported varieties over Romania's own ancient reds.
Fetească Neagră from Dealu Mare is a deep, dark red wine with flavors of black cherry, plum, and a signature smoky spice, made from a grape variety native to Romania and grown nowhere else in such concentration. It's full-bodied enough to age for years in bottle.
