Gogoşi

Unlike papanaşi, these get no cheese at all — just yeast dough, a hot fryer, and a dusting of sugar.

Simple yeasted dough balls are deep-fried until puffed and golden, then rolled in sugar or filled with jam, chocolate, or vanilla cream. They're a staple of fairground fryers and bakery windows across Muntenia and Bucharest.

Why it's made this way: Gogoşi are Romania's answer to the doughnut, part of the same Central European fried-dough family, and stayed a cheap, everyday fairground treat distinct from the richer, cheese-based papanaşi.
