Its name means 'sweet dreams,' and it opened in 2010 with training and equipment help from Blue Marble Ice Cream, an American shop that partnered with local entrepreneurs.
Rwanda's first-ever ice cream parlor churns soft serve on-site from local milk and sugar, in flavors like sweet cream, passion fruit, and strawberry. Opened in Huye (Butare) in 2010 by a cooperative of local women, it has become a destination stop for visitors from across the country and beyond.
Why it's made this way: The shop began as a women's economic-empowerment project in Rwanda's university town, and it grew into enough of a fixture that people travel from across the country, and even neighboring Burundi, just to visit.
