The same hives that produce this honey are maintained partly to help pollinate the crops growing right up to the edge of gorilla habitat.
Honey harvested from hives kept by community cooperatives around Volcanoes National Park is sold raw in jars and reused bottles at Musanze markets, drizzled over mandazi and mizuzu or stirred into tea. Beekeeping groups near the park manage hives partly as an income source that also supports pollination for surrounding farmland.
