A single avocado can cost as little as 500 Rwandan francs — about 35 US cents — despite its size and richness.
Halved avocados, famously large and creamy in Rwanda, are eaten straight from the skin with nothing more than a pinch of salt. Market stalls around Rubavu sell them for pennies, and lakeside vendors slice them to eat alongside grilled fish at sunset.
Why it's made this way: Rwanda's volcanic soil produces some of the region's biggest, richest avocados, and eating them plain with salt lets the fruit's own flavor headline nearly every meal.
