It's brewed by crushing ripe bananas by foot in wooden troughs, a communal process that's traditionally as much a social event as the drinking itself.

Urwagwa is a strong, tangy banana beer made by fermenting mashed ripe bananas, often blended with roasted sorghum for depth. It's served at weddings, baptisms, and community gatherings across Rwanda, and remains a livelihood for many small-scale local brewers.

Why it's made this way: It's considered Rwanda's most culturally significant traditional drink, deeply woven into hospitality customs and rites of passage rather than treated as an everyday casual beverage.
