The caramel sauce is traditionally made by cooking sugar and coconut milk together over hot rocks, then poured over cubes of dense coconut bread just before serving.

Cubes of fa'apapa, a dense coconut bread, or baked taro are tossed in a rich caramel sauce made from coconut milk and caramelized sugar, served as a special-occasion treat rather than an everyday snack.

Why it's made this way: Fa'ausi has traditionally marked an occasion of some importance in Samoan households around Upolu, turning simple coconut bread and sugar into a dessert reserved for celebrations.
