The brewery once produced Samichlaus, a 14% ABV doppelbock brewed only once a year on St Nicholas Day — for a time the strongest beer in the world. Its old brewing site is now Zürich's trendy Hürlimann Areal, home to a thermal spa built over the former fermentation cellars.
Hürlimann is a classic Swiss lager, malty and full-bodied, born from a strain of alcohol-tolerant yeast the brewery's founder discovered in the 19th century. The name still appears on taps across Zürich today, kept alive as a heritage brand.
Why it's made this way: Founded near Zürich in 1836, Hürlimann grew into Switzerland's largest brewery by 1880 and shaped the city's beer culture for over 150 years before merging into a national group.
