Vetkoek

Its name literally means 'fat cake' — just flour, yeast, and hot oil turned into something completely addictive.

Vetkoek is a ball of yeasted dough deep-fried until the outside turns crisp and golden while the inside stays soft and fluffy. Street vendors sell it plain, dusted with sugar, or split open and stuffed with mince or jam for a heartier snack.

Why it's made this way: With only a handful of cheap pantry ingredients, vetkoek has long been an accessible, fill-you-up snack across Southern Africa, and in Zimbabwe it remains a common sight at markets, bus stops, and school gates where speed and affordability matter most.
