Haldon Street in Lakemba closes to traffic every night through Ramadan and fills with dozens of stalls selling shawarma, kaak, knafeh, Syrian ice cream and Lebanese coffee, run by Sydney's Lebanese, Syrian and broader Muslim communities. Crowds break their fast at sunset and keep eating into the early hours.
Why it's made this way: Sydney is home to Australia's largest Lebanese community, concentrated around Lakemba since waves of migration from the mid-1970s onward, and the suburb's Ramadan night market has grown from a local tradition into one of the city's biggest annual food events.
