Mindil Beach Sunset Market started in 1987 (first in Darwin Mall before moving to the beach) and has grown into a multicultural night market with around 200 stalls, roughly 60 of them food stalls, all set up on the sand to watch the sun go down over the Timor Sea.
Laksa, satay, Sri Lankan curries, Greek souvlaki and fresh seafood are dished up from dozens of open-air stalls set up directly on Mindil Beach, eaten barefoot on the sand or at shared picnic tables as the sun sets over the water. It runs Thursday and Sunday evenings through Darwin's dry season.
Why it's made this way: Darwin's position as Australia's gateway to Southeast Asia and its long history of Chinese, Greek and Southeast Asian migration built one of the country's most genuinely multicultural food scenes, and Mindil Beach Sunset Market, running since 1987, became its best-known showcase.
