Melbourne's Chinatown on Little Bourke Street dates to the 1850s gold rush and is considered the oldest continuously running Chinatown in the Southern Hemisphere.

Whole ducks and slabs of pork glaze and turn in shopfront windows along Little Bourke Street, then get hacked to order over steamed rice with a ladle of dark soy-and-star-anise gravy. Cantonese barbecue shops are a lunch-crowd fixture of the neighbourhood.

Why it's made this way: Chinese miners who arrived during Victoria's 1850s gold rush settled around Little Bourke Street, and the precinct has been a Chinese community and trading hub ever since, making it one of the oldest working Chinatowns anywhere.
