Fremantle Fish & Chips

Fremantle's fish and chip trade was built largely by Italian and Sicilian immigrant fishing families who arrived from the early 1900s onward — the same community closely tied to pioneering rock lobster fishing out to the remote Abrolhos Islands, some 60 nautical miles offshore.

Fresh-battered fish, usually WA snapper or whiting, and thick-cut chips are served in paper baskets from harbourside canteens around Fremantle's Fishing Boat Harbour, eaten at outdoor tables with a view of the fishing fleet. Cicerello's, a Fremantle institution with roots going back to the early 1900s, is the best known of the strip's fish-and-chip shops.

Why it's made this way: Italian and Sicilian fishing families who settled around Fremantle from the early 1900s built the port's fishing industry, and the fish-and-chip shops that grew up along the harbour became the city's default way of eating that catch.
