Styrian Buschenschanken are farm wine taverns that by tradition may serve only their own wine with cold food, which is why the Brettljause is the standard order.
A wooden board arrives loaded with cured meats, farmhouse cheese, pickles, radish, bread, and butter — no cooking involved, just careful sourcing. Rural Styrian Buschenschank wine taverns and market stalls serve it as a casual, help-yourself snack alongside a glass of new wine.
Why it's made this way: It's rooted in farmhouse hospitality, where whatever cured meat and cheese was on hand got laid out for guests rather than cooked to order.
