Menus don't sell them by the plate — you order five, ten, or fifteen, counted like individual fingers.

Ćevapi are small grilled sausages of seasoned minced meat, served stacked inside warm flatbread (lepinja) with raw onion and a spoonful of ajvar or kajmak. Street grills cook them to order over open flame, so the smoke is often what pulls people in.

Why it's made this way: The small, fast-cooking shape traces back to Ottoman-era kebab cooking, and it spread across the former Yugoslavia because it could be grilled cheaply and quickly for busy city crowds.
