Travelers passing through San Miguel have long bought semita by the boxful specifically as a gift to bring home, turning the bread into one of eastern El Salvador's best-known souvenirs.
A layered sweet bread filled with pineapple jam, its top scored in a crosshatch pattern and dusted with sugar. San Miguel's bakeries sell it whole or by the slice from open storefronts near the market.
Why it's made this way: San Miguel's colonial-era bakery tradition made it the country's reference point for semita, distinguishing it from simpler breads baked elsewhere in El Salvador.
