Kaffemik

Photo coming soon

There's no invitation and no set guest list — a kaffemik is an open house anyone in town can walk into, eat cake, and leave from within minutes.

Homes and community halls lay out a spread of coffee alongside Danish-style layer cakes, kringle pastries, and cookies, and guests come and go freely throughout the day rather than sitting down for a formal meal. Nuuk and other West Greenland towns hold kaffemik gatherings to mark birthdays, baptisms, and other milestones.

Why it's made this way: Danish colonial ties brought coffee and European baking traditions to West Greenland's ports first, and the kaffemik custom of an all-day open house grew out of those port towns' tighter, more socially connected communities.
